Friday

My nephew is in boot camp. I remember when we used to shoot rubber bands at each other.

I don't imagine there are many organised support groups for parents whose children enlisted against their wishes. Not much sympathy from the military, or the anti-war factions. God, I don't know-what can I possibly say that wouldn't sound trite? I can easily imagine my son doing the same someday.

OK Bobby knows I'm not the least political, but "...Not much sympathy from the anti-war factions"??
Wtf?
Why do you think we are against the war? Cuz we like to be against things? Because we are un-american?
Could it maybe be that we don't like to see children die????

Sorry sweetie. Didn't mean to be political in such a personal post, but I felt I had to defend myself there.
If I was still a Catholic I'd pray for you guys. Shit-all I'd do at this point, though, huh?

...wish I could give you a hug.
Fuck the medium that doesn't let you do that face to face...
Fuck the 'net...

I believe I said "organised support groups." I also believe I said "not much" rather than "none."

There is a strong feeling culturally (though people rarely admit it) that what our children do is a direct result of upbringing-that the choices they make as adults reflect something the parents did or did not do. That is what I was trying to express.

As for your attack regarding what I think the anti-war movement is about-implying that I think you are protesting for the sake of protesting or "un-American" is insulting. I'm not going to argue with you in a comment thread on someone else's blog, but go back and read what you wrote-your attack was uncalled for. You took heartfelt sympathy and twisted it into something cruel.

Yeah, don't shoot any rubber bands at him next time you see him, OK? He might whip a grenade at you! He's made his decision (which sucks) and you can't stop him (which really sucks). He'll be alright, man. Strength.

Actual military forces boot camp? Or something (even) more insidious?
